Contractor Watpac has started earthworks for the new $10.2 million Townsville Waterfront Promenade.

Townsville City Council said the project was supporting 34 local construction jobs.

The Townsville Waterfront Promenade would transform the area along the Ross Creek for those visiting the Stadium Precinct, Mayor Jenny Hill said.

“Watpac, who are constructing this first stage of the promenade, has begun the initial earthworks and the construction of this section of the promenade is due for completion by the time the new stadium opens in early 2020,” she said.

“This first stage of construction activity is being managed on behalf of cuncil by the Department of Housing and Public Works in conjunction with the delivery of the North Queensland Stadium project.”

The project has received joint funding of $10.2 million – $5.2 million from Townsville City Council and $5 million from the State Government’s Building our Regions program.

The Promenade project will in total include the construction of 460m of concrete pathways and 177m of mangrove boardwalks, converting Little Fletcher Bridge into a pedestrian bridge, and landscaping.
